How to Keep ChatGPT From Saving Your Chats to History
Every conversation you have with ChatGPT is, by default, part of your account history. It sits in the sidebar, it is visible to anyone who opens that account, and it can be used to improve the models unless you have opted out in data controls. For most chats that is fine. For the other chats — the medical question, the draft contract, the customer data you pasted to debug a regex, the very honest career question — it is the reason people close the tab and type the question into Google instead.
ChatGPT has a mode for exactly this. The problem is that it is a mode: you have to remember to switch it on every single time, and it quietly switches back when you start a new conversation.
What Temporary Chat actually does
Temporary Chat is ChatGPT's not-saved mode. In a temporary chat:
- The conversation does not appear in your chat history.
- It is not used to train or improve the models by default.
- The sidebar stays as it was, with no trace of the conversation.
What it does not do is hide you from OpenAI entirely, and it does not change your account settings. It also does not encrypt anything or route the traffic elsewhere — it is a history and training-data switch, not a VPN. That distinction matters if you are considering it for a work laptop: check your employer's policy separately.
Why "remember to turn it on" fails
Temporary Chat lives at the top of the ChatGPT interface, one click away. In practice, the click happens after you have already typed the sensitive part, or it does not happen at all, because you started with a throwaway question and only later realised where the conversation was going. The mode that protects the chat you would not want in history is the one you forget to enable.
The other half of the failure is session drift. You enable Temporary Chat, have the conversation, then start a new one tomorrow from the same page and it looks identical — but the mode is off. Nothing warns you. The chat is saved.
Make Temporary Chat the default, not the exception
The fix is to invert the default: every ChatGPT page loads in Temporary Chat mode automatically, and you opt out for the conversations you do want to keep. That is what Temporary Chat for ChatGPT does.
- It detects the page when ChatGPT loads, on both
chat.openai.comandchatgpt.com, and activates Temporary Chat as soon as the page is ready — before you type anything. - It keeps the mode active across refreshes and new conversations, which is where the manual approach falls apart.
- A popup toggle turns the whole behaviour off, for the sessions where you want history: a long project thread, a writing draft, anything you plan to return to.
The result is a simple rule you can actually keep: history is opt-in. If something should be saved, you switch the extension off for that conversation. If you forget, the safe default applies.
When this is the right tool
- Health and personal questions. The conversations people most want private are the ones they are least likely to remember to protect.
- Pasting real data to debug it. Log lines, JSON payloads, customer records, an internal URL. A temporary chat keeps that out of your history by default.
- Work on a shared or family machine. A history-free sidebar is a small but real privacy gain.
- Thinking out loud. The half-formed questions you would not want to see in a sidebar next week, next to the questions you would.
When it is the wrong tool
- Long projects. If you rely on picking a thread back up, you want history. Turn the extension off for those.
- Shared team accounts or ChatGPT Projects. Those are built around stored context; temporary chats do not participate in it.
- Anything that needs an audit trail. Temporary means gone from history, which is the opposite of a record.
Two habits worth adding
First, verify once rather than trusting blindly: with the extension on, open a temporary chat, send a message, then check the sidebar. Nothing should appear. If something does, the page layout has changed and the extension needs an update — worth knowing before you rely on it.
Second, pair it with a history cleanup. Temporary Chat protects new conversations; the ones already in your sidebar are still there. Deleting them is a manual job in ChatGPT's settings, and worth doing once before you start relying on the new default.
Privacy defaults are the only ones that work, because they are the ones that do not depend on you remembering. Install Temporary Chat for ChatGPT from the Chrome Web Store and stop deciding, chat by chat, whether this one should be saved. If you also lose track of when a conversation happened, Message Timestamps for ChatGPT puts a timestamp on every message.
